What is SS-31?
SS-31 (also known as Elamipretide or MTP-131) is a tetrapeptide specifically designed to target and concentrate in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It is unique among antioxidants in that it selectively accumulates in mitochondria at concentrations thousands of times higher than in the cytoplasm. SS-31 protects cardiolipin — the critical phospholipid of the inner mitochondrial membrane — from oxidative damage, preserving mitochondrial architecture and function.

Key Benefits
Mitochondrial Function
Protects and restores mitochondrial electron transport chain efficiency, improving cellular energy output.
Cardiolipin Protection
Prevents peroxidation of cardiolipin, the phospholipid essential for cristae structure and ATP synthase function.
Oxidative Stress Reduction
Neutralizes mitochondrial ROS at the source without blocking beneficial ROS signaling — a key advantage over systemic antioxidants.
Cardiovascular Support
Studied in heart failure models for its ability to restore cardiac mitochondrial function and improve contractility.
Neurological Health
Research interest in SS-31 for neuroprotection, given the high energy demands and ROS sensitivity of neuronal mitochondria.
Anti-Aging
By preserving mitochondrial integrity, SS-31 targets one of the primary cellular drivers of age-related decline.
How It Works
Selective Mitochondrial Accumulation
SS-31's alternating aromatic and cationic residues allow it to selectively partition into the inner mitochondrial membrane, concentrating where it is needed most.
Cardiolipin Stabilization
SS-31 binds directly to cardiolipin, preventing its peroxidation by cytochrome c and preserving the cristae structure critical for efficient ATP production.
Electron Transport Chain Protection
By protecting cardiolipin, SS-31 maintains the structural organization of Complexes I, III, and IV — preventing electron leak and ROS amplification.
Mitochondrial Biogenesis Support
Reduced mitochondrial stress signals PGC-1α activation, promoting new mitochondria synthesis and long-term organelle health.
